What is CPS in subtitles?+
CPS means characters per second — how many characters a viewer must read each second a subtitle is on screen. Most streaming QC guidelines cap adult-oriented subtitles around 20 CPS. Above that, viewers struggle to finish reading before the cue disappears.
How is CPS calculated?+
CPS = cue character count (excluding spaces and line breaks) divided by the cue duration in seconds. A cue with 60 characters shown for 2 seconds has a CPS of 30.
What is a good reading speed for subtitles?+
20 CPS is the common adult maximum used by major streaming platforms. Children's content typically targets 17 CPS or less. Some fansub groups allow up to 25 CPS for fast dialogue.
